Hibs Ladies’ togetherness pays off

Hibernian LADIES edged out Forfar Farmington 1-0 in their Scottish Women’s Premier League game and coach Willie Kirk believes it was his side’s togetherness that saw them come out on top.

A stunning strike from Kirsty McLaughlin was enough to seal the win for the home side and keep the pressure on league leaders Glasgow City.

“The conditions were horrible,” said Kirk. “It should have been a really good game given the way each team likes to play, but the wind just killed it.

“Nonetheless, it was an excellent result and we continue to build momentum.

“Forfar are a very good side and penned us back during the second-half although Shannon Lynn didn’t have any saves of note to make.

“Our two 18-year-old centre-halves were absolutely fantastic and defended brilliantly against everything Forfar threw their way.

“The togetherness the girls showed during the match was something I haven’t seen in my two-and-a-half years with the club. This is the type of result that we may look back on in six months and highlight as a huge three points.”

Elsewhere, Hutchison Vale contributed to their own downfall when they were defeated 6-2 by Celtic at Lennoxtown.

Boss Ian McDonald commented: “We lost six bad goals and were at times our own worst enemy. The Celtic goalkeeper made a great save from Kat Smart with the score 4-2 and had we scored then, we may have pushed on and taken something from the match.”

Meanwhile, Spartans conceded a 94th minute equaliser to draw 4-4 at Ainslie Park against Hamilton Academical.

Spartans dropped down to fifth in the table and find themselves trailing Glasgow City by a massive 11 points after just seven fixtures.

Head Coach Debbi McCulloch said: “We are bitterly disappointed. To score what we thought was the winning goal in the 90th minute and then concede in time added on makes the draw feel like a defeat.”
