Hibs Ladies have agonisingly missed out on qualification for the last 32 of the Champions League after a 1-1 stalemate with Olimpia Cluj in Romania.
The Hibees knew only a win against hosts Cluj would see them finish top of Group 2 having picked up four points from their previous two matches, a 5-0 thrashing of Swansea City last Tuesday followed up by another 1-1 draw with Ukrainian champions WFC Kharkiv on Friday. Cluj, meanwhile, had taken maximum points from their opening two fixtures meaning a draw against the Capital outfit would be good enough to see them through.
With only the ten group winners joining the 21 teams already given a bye into the Round of 32, plus the runner’s up with the best record, Chris Roberts’ side’s participation in Europe is over for another year.
The Romanians edged in front as early as the fifth minute through Alexandra Lunca. Lia Tweedie rattled the crossbar for Hibs ten minutes before the interval before Lucy Graham’s 85th minute header proved too little too late.
