HIBS wrapped up their seven-day training camp in Spain by slipping to defeat against English League One side Wigan Athletic this evening.
Watched by Scotland boss Gordon Strachan and legend Kenny Dalglish, the Capital club led for most of the match, Fraser Fyvie opening the scoring in the 13th minute as he slipped home Dominique Malonga’s pass against his old club.
But Martyn Waghorn equalised, sidefooting the ball high into the net beyond substitute goalkeeper Antonio Reguero with 20 minutes to go and with just 90 seconds to go the Lactics man got his second, bundling the ball home from a corner..
Although the temperature was a sweltering 29C as the game got underway at 6 pm local time, it was played at a reasonable pace, Hibs goalkeeper Mark Oxley pushing aside an effort from Lactics’ Sanmi Odelusi before Fyvie struck.
As promised, Stubbs rang the changes at half-time, making seven substitutions although teenagers Aaron Dunsmore, Callum Crane, Scott Martin and Lewis Allan all got the entire 90 minutes.
Even so, Hibs looked as if they were going to hold out for the win until Waghorn hit them with that double.
Hibs (starting X1): Oxley, Dunsmore, Hanlon, Fontaine, Crane, Martin, Fyvie, Handling, S Allan, L Allan, Malonga.
