Hibs and Rangers are in discussions over a transfer fee for the Ibrox club’s 22-year-old midfielder Ross McCrorie.

The Easter Road outfit want to bring the Scotland Under-21 internationalist to the Capital and are believed to have made an opening offer for the player.

Hibs head coach Jack Ross is a long-term admirer of McCrorie, who has played close to 50 games Rangers but has found first-team action hard to come by during Steven Gerrard's reign. He spent last season on loan at Portsmouth in England’s League One, but Ross tried to sign him when he was manager of Sunderland and is hopeful of landing his man this time around.

McCrorie is keen to leave Ibrox on a permanent deal and kick-start his career elsewhere in Scotland. The Evening News understands that Hibs, who currently sit top of the Premiership after winning their first three league matches, would be his preferred destination.

A defensive midfielder by trade but also able to play centre-half or right-back, McCrorie would further bolster a Hibs team that has started the season strongly but is in need of reinforcements, particularly after centre-half Adam Jackson departed for Lincoln City on Tuesday evening.

McCrorie has trained all summer with Rangers and has been part of the match-day squads, so would be able to hit the ground running at Hibs. All parties concerned are working towards a positive resolution before Saturday evening’s match between Hibs and Motherwell.
