The wee Hibees recorded a 1-1 draw with their Kilmarnock counterparts in the side’s final match of the season at the Hibernian Training Centre on Tuesday, May 25 and they were relying on other results going their way to seal the runners-up spot.

St Mirren’s 2-2 draw with Celtic on Wednesday, May 26 combined with their 3-1 defeat by Rangers in the final round of fixtures meant the Buddies finished in fourth place on 19 points, level with Killie.

Celtic defeated Kilmarnock 3-1 on Saturday, May 29 but although they finished level on points with Hibs the Capital club secured second on goal difference, scoring six more goals than the wee Hoops.

Hibs went into their final game against Kilmarnock hoping to build on their come-from-behind win against St Mirren in their penultimate match.

Gareth Evans and Eddie May tweaked the set-up after the 2-1 win over the Buddies, restoring Connor Young to the starting line-up after his goal last time out and reverting to a 3-5-2 formation.

Innes Lawson continued in midfield while Jayden Fairley took up one of the centre-half positions with Mack Weir unavailable. Josh Currie, who started the last game in attack, took on right wingback duties with Oscar MacIntyre on the opposite flank.

After a largely uneventful first half, the game came to life in the second half when the visitors took the lead following a contentious penalty award.

Hibs equalised shortly after the hour mark with Young on target for the second consecutive game. Although the hosts pressed hard for the winner and had a number of presentable chances, they were unable to find a second and had to be content with the draw.

Hibs end the season with six wins, three draws, and three defeats from their 12 matches with 29 goals scored and 21 conceded.

Murray Johnson has kept three clean sheets while there were eight different goalscorers.
