Jack Ross wants clarity over Hibs season as league uncertainty rages on

Hibs manager Jack Ross believes it is incumbent on the footballing authorities to make some concrete decisions and alleviate the ongoing uncertainty around the future of the current league season as time marches on.

The Easter Road side played their last game, away to Aberdeen, on March 7 and since then players and staff have been placed on furlough as the governing bodies debate the likelihood of seeing out the Premiership or following the example of the lower leagues and bringing the campaign to a premature end.

Initially an advocate of completing the outstanding fixtures as his men sought to cement their top six position and then push on in the quest for European football, the Leith gaffer says he is no longer convinced that scenario is viable.

“I think your view does change as time marches on. I think everyone would have preferred to finish the current season, for obvious reasons, but as time goes on then the impact of finishing the current season and the knock on effect on next season becomes more of an issue. We have already had one season hampered by this, do we want another season hampered by it? It is difficult, though. I understand that.”

With SPFL clubs still debating the outcome and when to formalise a decision, Ross says he would not be surprised if they are still waiting to see how others conclude matters.

“There has always been that alignment between the vast majority of European countries in terms of when the seasons run so people are weighing that up as well. Any time there has been any chat about summer football, some of the biggest resistance has been around staying in alignment with the major leagues in Europe.

“In an ideal world we would complete the current season but it is far from an ideal world that we are living in at the moment so I’m pretty relaxed about what option they decide on. It would just be nice to get a decision and get a bit more certainty. Then we can think about getting some kind of normal life again and getting back to work.”
