Griffiths aims to make mark in England

Leigh Griffiths has admitted he still has his heart set on the English Championship in the wake of Hibs’ crushing Scottish Cup final defeat.

The Scotland Under-21 striker’s loan deal at Easter Road has now elapsed and while the lifelong Hibs fan admitted he’d be open to staying in Edinburgh, he’s determined to make a name for himself down south.

Although former Wolves boss Mick McCarthy had told Griffiths he was surplus to requirements, the player is hoping the arrival of new Moineux manager Stale Solbakken will see that decision reversed.

However, he admitted the scouts dispatched by the Midlands club to watch both him and Matt Doherty, also on loan to Pat Fenlon’s side, in action against Hearts at Hampden would have left less than impressed as Hibs crashed 5-1 with Pa Kujabi shown the red card.

Griffiths said: “I’ve not had any discussions yet. I will go back down to Wolves during the pre-season and see what the new manager has got to say.

“If he doesn’t want me, I will need to weigh up my options and we will see what will happen. But the Championship is a great league and I would like to chance my arm down there.

“With the new manager coming in, there might be places up for grabs. Players will be moving on and players will be staying. I just hope I’m one of those staying to fight for a place in the first team.

“I’ve not had much contact with Wolves while I’ve been with Hibs, but I think Matt Doherty spoke to the reserve coach recently. He said they were sending a couple of people to watch the Scottish Cup final.

“I don’t think they would have been too impressed by either of our performances, but we just need to go back in pre-season and see what they say.

“I think every Hibs fan knows I am a Hibs supporter myself. If the opportunity arises to sign a permanent deal, I would love to do it. But right now I’m trying to concentrate on being at Wolves.”
