Hibernian Ladies looking to avenge cup final defeat

Hibernian Ladies FC face the first test of their title ambitions tomorrow when they take on Glasgow City and midfielder Rebecca Zoltie insists her team are ready to inflict a first league defeat on the defending champions for over three years.

The encounter at Petershill Park, Glasgow (kick-off 2.00pm) presents Hibs with an early opportunity to wipe away the painful memory of last season’s Scottish Cup final defeat to the same opponents and Zoltie insists that’s all the motivation her side need.

She said: “This will be the first time we have met one another since the cup final and the hurt of that defeat is still fresh in the back of everyone’s mind.

“We need to believe that we are good enough to beat the likes of City and Celtic because the only thing that has stopped us winning the title in recent seasons is a lack of belief.

“It will be a tough match because games against City are never easy as they have so many talented players, but we are very optimistic about the game and our chances of getting a result.

“We have been close to winning the title in recent seasons only to drop silly points in games we really should’ve won.

“This term we must make sure we treat every game the same and not lose focus on what we want to achieve.

“Hibs have gone too long without winning the title and it’s about time that changed.”

Elsewhere, Hutchison Vale play Spartans at Saughton Enclosure (kick-off 2.00pm) and coach Ian McDonald is hoping his side can build on their fine showing against Rangers two weeks ago.

McDonald admitted Hutchie will look to Inverness City’s performance against Spartans recently for inspiration after the Highlanders surprisingly held the Ainslie Park club to a 2-2 draw.

He said: “Although we didn’t get the result we wanted against Rangers, we did get the performance and as a consequence of that we go into the Spartans match in good spirits.

“We know few people will expect us to take anything from the match because we are the underdogs, however, we take great confidence from Inverness holding Spartans a couple of weeks ago and I can see no reason why we can’t do the same.”
