Hibs boss Terry Butcher today revealed Scott Robertson’s knee injury is worse than first feared with the midfielder now ruled out of the Easter Road club’s push for a top-six finish.

But a scan has revealed the former Dundee, Dundee United and Blackpool star suffered a “grade two” tear which will see him sidelined until mid-April.

Ironically, Robertson was given a run in the “mini derby” to hone his match fitness having been out of action for three weeks, a one-match ban forcing him out of the visit of Celtic before he was an unused substitute in the Scottish Cup defeat by Raith Rovers, Hibs having been idle on the intervening weekend as Inverness Caley took on Hearts in the semi-final of the League Cup at Easter Road.

Butcher said: “It’s probably worse than we thought but that’s the way things go.

“It’s hard on Scott, six to eight weeks is a long while. He was coming back into the team, I was looking to play him against Ross County at the weekend and then that happened.

“We’d given him a run out in the Under-20s to get him ready for Saturday and were actually at the point where we were thinking of taking him off when he was hurt.

“It makes you start thinking if it was right to play him, but every player wants to play, and he was doing well in the game.

“Scott’s had injuries before and will bounce back, but as bad as it is for him, the door opens for others – as it did for Danny Handling against Ross County. He took it and did very well in the game.”

While Robertson has been ruled out until possibly mid-April, Butcher was hopeful on-loan Sunderland winger Duncan Watmore will be fit to face Kilmarnock on Saturday having missed the visit of the Staggies after picking up a foot injury on his debut against Raith – a game which saw three Rovers players booked for fouls on him.

The Hibs boss said: “Duncan’s making progress. We’ll have to wait and see if it settles down – but we are optimistic and hopefully we will have him available for selection.”

Hibs stars Danny Haynes and Sam Stanton will be in the clubstore tomorrow between 2pm and 2.45pm to meet fans.
