The 30-year-old, who started the first two Championship games of the season, hasn’t featured in any of his team’s last three matches due to a calf injury. Manager Neil Lennon is hopeful that he will be available for either the home game against Ayr United on Saturday week or the trip to Queen of the South the following weekend.

“Liam’s a week or two away yet,” Lennon told the Evening News. “He’s not a million miles away but he won’t make this weekend.”

Fellow injury victim Danny Handling, meanwhile, is still some distance away from a return to action.

The 22-year-old midfielder, who missed the whole of last season with cruciate ligament damage, suffered a fresh knee injury in July, just after the home leg of the Europa League clash with Brondby, a match for which he was an unused substitute.

At the time, Lennon suggested Handling may return some time this month, but the manager has now indicated that it could be another two months before he is ready to be considered for selection. “It’ll be October, maybe even November before Danny’s back,” he said. “Even when he’s healed, he’ll have to do a lot of training and rehabilitation work, which could take another two or three weeks.”
