The Hibees created numerous opportunities to extend their lead but were made to pay for their wastefulness in front of goal seven minutes before the interval when Michaela McAlonie’s dangerous ball across the six-yard box was well taken by Rebecca Galbraith.

Substitute Carla Boyce, who had only been on the park a short time, fired Hibs in front again for what turned out to be the winner.

Rachael Boyle’s low-driven corner into the box was met by Boyce who turned the ball beyond Rachel Harrison in the Spartans goal.

“I thought we were really good and could have won by a lot more,” Hibs boss Dean Gibson said of his side’s opening day win. “The game should have been out of sight by 35 or 40 minutes. Hopefully as games progress, the match sharpness will come back and we’ll start to be a bit more clinical in front of goal. If we’d taken one or two more of those chances then it would have been a different team talk at halftime. But overall it was a very good performance.”

Elsewhere in SWPL 1, Hearts Women suffered a 5-1 defeat to Rangers at the Glasgow club’s training centre.

A Zoe Ness hat-trick with further strikes coming from former Hibs attacker Kirsten Reilly and Demi Vance consigned the Jambos to a heavy loss.

Murron Cunningham’s goal for Andy Kirk’s side proved to be in vain.

And in SWPL 2, Boroughmuir Thistle went down 3-1 to Hamilton Accies at the Fountain of Youth Stadium.
