Neil Doncaster outlined the reasons against voiding the current season

SPFL chief executive Neil Doncaster has ruled out voiding the Ladbrokes Premiership due to the complexities it would provoke, domestically and on the European stage.

Doncaster believes going down the voiding route could cause issues with Uefa when putting forward sides to represent Scotland in continental competition next season.

It is also the view that It could leave the organisation liable to claims from broadcasters and clubs.

The SPFL passed their resolution earlier this month to terminate the Championship, League One and League Two on a points-per-game basis, setting a precedent for the Scottish Premiership to follow.

Celtic are primed to be champions for the ninth season in a row, while Hearts will be demoted.

Elsewhere in Europe, France have concluded their season with Paris Saint-Germain set to be crowned winners, while the Netherlands have gone down the route of ending their season, using the final placings to determine European spots but not naming a league winner.

Doncaster told The Herald: “UEFA have made it clear that clubs have to be put forward for Europe on sporting merit.

“If you void a league it’s quite hard to see how teams can be put forward on sporting merit. We feel deciding a league on a points per game basis is sporting merit.

“There are all sorts of other factors. If it’s voided you would find a number of clubs and the league would face highly-damaging claims for a season that never happened. It could have led potentially to claims being made by partners of the league and of clubs themselves.”
