Leith Athletic aiming to complete the treble
Leith Athletic manager Derek Riddel has urged his players to give everything they can muster as they attempt to seal a coveted treble this weekend.
With the league title and Alex Jack Cup already in the cabinet, Riddel’s men have an opportunity to complete the jigsaw on Sunday when they meet Lothian Thistle Hutchison Vale in the King Cup final at Olivebank.
Having enjoyed last weekend’s celebrations that saw Leith presented with the league trophy after their 1-0 win over Lothian at Saughton, Riddel says he has a determined bunch eager to complete the job.
“We had a really good night out last Friday after receiving the trophy and some of the guys continued the party over the weekend with Hibs winning the Scottish Cup so it was a good couple of days for Leith all round,” Riddel explained.
“But everybody is good and ready to go and focused on Sunday’s game that could see us win the treble. We’ve worked so hard to get where we are so they deserve this last final and hopefully we can go there and win it. It’s going to be a tough game and the league table doesn’t lie as we’re the two strongest teams this season. We’re looking forward to it.”
Lothian boss Raymond Carr says he has no qualms about fielding a youthful line-up against the league champions.
Carr is determined his team finish the season on a high after relinquishing their league crown to Sunday’s opponents who finished nine points clear at the summit.
“We’ll have some of the younger lads playing, that’s for sure,” he said. “I’ve always been a firm believer that if you’re good enough you’re old enough. Our young guys have done well this season so we’re relying on them but they’re looking forward to it.
“Listen, we’ve had a great season despite not retaining the league and what have you. The eight games we played in the Scottish Cup, albeit three of them were replays, is something we’ll always remember so what they achieved is quite remarkable really.
“I think Leith know we’ll be coming out next year to put a challenge in and get the league trophy back. We’re going to be using the training facilities at the Oriam at Riccarton next season so that’s going to be fantastic.”
