Linlithgow on course to retain cup

Kicking off as firm favourites against the Premier League side, they started the game well with a lot of possession and took the lead after 16 minutes when Tommy Coyne slipped a ball into the Broxburn box for Calum Smith to race on to. Smith reached the ball before the keeper and dinked it into the net for the opener.

Broxburn put pressure on but were caught by a quick break from the heart of the Linlithgow defence when Mark Tyrrell played a long, 70-yard ball to the right corner of the Broxburn penalty box. Coyne had judged his run perfectly and first-timed a lob over the keeper and into the net.

Broxburn still kept going and pulled a goal back with a couple of minutes remaining. Good work from subs Michael Gibson and Gary Miller ended with a low cross into the box which caught defender Tyrrell out as he blasted the ball into his own net.

Delighted Linlithgow striker Smith said: “It was great to get the opening goal in as big a game as this.”

Broxburn boss Steve Pittman was delighted with the performance if not the result: “We more than matched them for the 90 minutes but football can be a cruel game at times.”
