Bo’ness held by solid Penicuik

Bo’ness dropped two valuable points in their bid to claim the Super League title for the second season in a row.

They battered the Penicuik defence for most of the afternoon but the visitors’ central pairing of Dougie Cunnison and Scott McCulloch were outstanding at the back.

Bo’ness started the game like a train: pressing a high line against a Penicuik side looking to complete the double over the big two after their win at Linlithgow a couple of weeks ago and the pressure paid off with a goal on the half-hour mark from defender Paul Murphy. A string of passes involving Scott Pittman and Darren Gribben ended with Gribben crossing for Murphy to head powerfully home.

A second goal was looming but very much against the run of play the visitors equalised. Penicuik played an overlap down the right wing for Grant Killin to knock over a cross. His low drive was cleared by the Bo’ness defence but only to Greg Ross who hammered the ball home from 20 yards to take the teams in level at the break.

Bo’ness started the second half again like they had the first and took the lead again within a minute of the restart. This time Gribben himself scored after Chris Donnelly had crossed low for him to side-foot home from ten yards. Their lead lasted all of 30 seconds however as Penicuik raced straight up the pitch from the kick-off and equalised once again, trialist Blair Henderson hitting a low drive into the net from outside the box.

Bo’ness were shocked for a spell but were soon pushing that high line again in search of a winner. The Penicuik backline were rock solid though with McCulloch and Cunnison at the heart of it defending for their lives and held out. They had their share of luck, especially when a Cunnison header came off his own post and out for a corner.

“To have played the top four teams in the Super League and not disgraced ourselves; we have to be delighted with the start to our season,” said Penicuik manager Craig Meikle.
