Depleted City look to cup for respite after losses

Edinburgh City take what is probably a welcome break from Ferrari Packaging Lowland league action tomorrow as they welcome Ormiston in the Football Nation East of Scotland Qualifying Cup second round.

The champions have suffered back-to-back league defeats by Whitehill Welfare and Stirling University respectively and manager Gary Jardine revealed he will be without several first-team players for tomorrow’s tie at Meadowbank. “Mark Osborne’s on holiday and Frazer Paterson is out with a heel fracture,” he said. “Ross Guthrie is still out injured but we do have Dougie Gair back again.” Joe Mbu also returns alongside his captain, having missed the recent home defeat by Whitehill due to the birth of his son.

Spartans face familiar opposition in Burntisland Shipyard in the same competition, albeit a round earlier at Ainslie Park. The North Edinburgh side comfortably beat Shipyard twice in cup competitions last season. Midfielder Dan Ward could be a doubt, being forced off after just seven minutes of Saturdays’ game against old club Edinburgh University.

Preston Athletic are on league business away to Dalbeattie Star. Midfielder Jamie Beaton is still suspended following his straight red card against BSC Glasgow a fortnight ago.
