JACK GUTHRIE grabbed a double as Edinburgh University won 5-0 at Gala Fairydean Rovers.
In the early exchanges, Gala Fairydean’s Taylor Hope shot past after six minutes, while Scott McCrory-Irving came close for the students in the 10th minute.
After a good build-up, Callum Jardine’s driven shot from the edge of the box was brilliantly palmed round the post by Uni goalkeeper Mark Tait.
In the 15th minute, Joe Aitken latched on to a headed flick-on to slide the ball under Mark Wilson from an acute angle to open the scoring for the visitors.
Stuart Noble just failed to get his head to a cross as Gala pushed for an equaliser and, soon after, a deep cross from Scott Main resulted in Gala striker Jamie Gibson hitting the post when it seemed easier to score. In the 53rd minute, Gala lost possession in midfield and the ball was pushed forward quickly to Guthrie, who after drawing defenders, squared the ball to Mair, who scored at the second attempt.
Midway through the second half, Ian McFarlane slid the ball to Guthrie on the edge of the box and he turned and drilled past Wilson from 15 yards to put the students three up.
With ten minutes left, Andy Findlay knocked home the students’ fourth.
Tim Rawlinson replaced McCrory-Irving for the students and from a corner he headed the ball goalwards but Wilson was there to deny him.
Fortunately for the students, Guthrie was first to the rebound and slammed the loose ball into the roof of the net.
