Both Hibs and Hearts Ladies made it safely through to the second round of the SWPL League Cup with victories at the weekend.
Chris Roberts’ Hibs are the current holders having defeated Glasgow City 2-1 in June’s final and made their first steps to retaining the trophy with a 6-0 thrashing of lower league opponents East Fife at King George V Park in Leven.
Midfielder Lisa Robertson scored a brace with Abi Harrison, Rachael McLaughlan and Chelsea Cornet also on target. The other goal was courtesy of an East Fife defender following an Amy Gallacher cross.
Hearts, meanwhile, were impressive 3-0 winners at top-flight Hamilton Accies – Ashley Carse scored twice for the Jambos with Jen Dodds adding a third. Elsewhere, city rivals Spartans ran out 4-3 winners at Motherwell to book their place in the next round.
Simone McMahon, Laura Gavin, Alana Marshall and Bobbie Beveridge all chipped in with goals for Suzy Shepherd’s side. Newly-formed Edinburgh University Hutchison Vale crashed out at the first stage however as they were beaten 8-3 by Rangers at New Tinto Park. League champions Glasgow City are through after an 8-0 win over Jeanfield Swifts.
The new league campaign begins next month.
