Spartans extended their lead at the top of the Lowland League with a convincing 4-0 victory at home to Threave Rovers.

The home side started well and as is often the case at Ainslie Park had to deal with the visitors sitting in deep during a stuffy first half. A neat pass from Willie Bremner set Jack Beesley free, he found Chris Anderson in the box however the striker was surrounded by defenders before he could get a shot away.

Neither side were able to test the goalkeepers early on and it took until the 17th minute for the first attempt at goal, Alistair Sloan’s ambitious long-range strike for the visitors flying high over the bar.

It took until the 31st minute for the home side to open the scoring, and they did so in fortuitous fashion. Beesley’s cross from the right wing was intercepted on the six-yard line by Threave defender Scott Wilby. His attempted clearance hit the shins of striker Chris Anderson and the ball bounced into the net.

With the visitors behind, they had to go looking for an equaliser, allowing the game to open up and Spartans took full advantage as they dominated the second half.

Chris Anderson was again in the right place at the right time in the 49th minute. A superb curling Beesley free-kick hit the bar and landed at Anderson’s feet allowing him the easiest of tasks to tap the ball into the goal from six yards out for his and Spartans’ second.

The Capital side continued to push for more and Beesley turned scorer in the 75th minute. Keith McLeod played an accurate pass inside the box, which Beesley controlled before lifting it over keeper Vinnie Parker.

It took until the 78th minute for Spartans keeper Scott Bennett to be called into action, as he had to race out and snatch the ball off the feet of Threave sub David Frew.

Kevin Motion headed a Beesley cross onto the bar just moments before McLeod converted in the 80th minute, when Chris Anderson played a cutback pass to the prolific striker who blasted the ball past Parker for his 26th goal of the season.
