RAYMOND CARR’S Lothian Thistle Hutchison Vale progressed to the semi-finals of the Image Printers East of Scotland Qualifying Cup with a 2-0 win over former boss Grant Carnie’s new charges Whitehill Welfare.
The Lowland League’s top scorer Aaron Somerville had the game’s first chance but he shot over from a tight angle. The visitors almost took the lead when the ball found its way to Connor McGregor in the box and his well-struck shot was diverted wide by Wayne Sproule.
However, just before the half hour mark, a Lothian corner was met by the unmarked Grant Munro at the near post and he headed past Bryan Young to open the scoring.
Whitehill went immediately in search of an equaliser, however Sproule’s excellent cross somehow evaded Wayne McIntosh and Steven Manson shot over at the back post.
McIntosh found himself in space in the box after the interval, rounded Gregor Amos in goal but was unable to find a team-mate to prod the ball home before John Hall had an effort cleared off the line.
A long ball then caught out the Whitehill defence as Daniel O’Donnell was unable to cope with the pace of substitute Willis Hare, who charged through on goal only to be denied by a fantastic block from Young. Hall’s shot from distance clipped the Lothian crossbar and over before Hare’s effort on goal was diverted wide by Willie Kidd.
However, on 79 minutes Lothian settled the tie when Sean Wringe beat Young to a cross and headed into the net to double his side’s advantage.
With the clock running down, Andy Martin found substitute James Flynn but his shot was saved low down by Amos. A Somerville corner was then only just scrambled clear as Kidd headed over before deep into injury time Gareth Thom was sent off for pushing McGregor.
