PRESTON ATHLETIC won 2-1 at Dalbeattie with a performance that would have made Jimmy Watters proud.
The Panners wore black armbands in memory of long-serving committee member Watters, who passed away last week.
After an even 20 minutes, the game came alive as Dalbeattie’s Lee Wells flew into a high challenge and the referee had no hesitation in showing a straight red. Within minutes, Preston took the lead as Josh McGonigal latched onto a slack passback, rounded the goalkeeper and a defender before his shot eventually crossed the line despite a last-gasp attempted block.
The lead only lasted four minutes, though, as Lewis Sloan curled in a lovely free-kick from 25 yards to level.
Before half-time, Preston nearly snatched the initiative as Andrew Gilchrist’s deflected effort hit the top of the crossbar.
Preston tried to take advantage of the extra man as Dalbeattie seemed to be content to hold onto the point.
But in the last minute, James Martin threaded a neat pass into the path of Juan Belope, who neatly flicked the ball across Darren Martin and off the post and into the net to seal a deserved three points.
