MUSSELBURGH ATHLETIC progressed to the quarter-finals of the DJ Laing East of Scotland Cup last night with a comfortable 2-0 win over Newtongrange Star.
Burgh boss Stevie McLeish made four changes for the trip to New Victoria Park from the side that secured their place in the Scottish Junior Cup final against Linlithgow Rose, but they still had too much for title-chasing Nitten.
Burgh went in front from a Jordyn Sheerin free-kick after 26 minutes, his 36th goal of the season. Youngster Jed Davie made sure of the win with a sweet finish from the edge of the box. Burgh host Hill of Beath Hawthorn in the last eight.
Linlithgow Rose will take on rivals Bo’ness United at Newtown Park for a quarter-final spot in the same competition after they edged Bonnyrigg Rose 3-2 at Prestonfield.
Colin Strickland gave Linlithgow an early lead, before David McGlynn’s side hit back through a Ross Archibald header, although Tommy Coyne restored the home side’s advantage just a minute later.
Blair Batchelor hit a third for Danny Smith’s men a minute after the restart, before Dean Whitson pulled one back for Bonnyrigg on 51 minutes.
Dalkeith Thistle strengthened their Premier League promotion hopes with a 4-0 rout of Edinburgh United at King’s Park as striker Stephen Pusledzki hit a hat-trick.
