Newtongrange Star and Spartans served up an excellent pre-season friendly which ended 1-1 at New Victoria Park. Newtongrange, from the East Juniors Super League, went ahead after 27 minutes against their Scottish Football Lowland League opponents when Kris Renton set up Sean Jamieson, who hit a left-foot shot high into the net from 14 yards.

Spartans equalised five minutes before half-time when Sean Muhsin slammed home Jack Beesley’s cross into the roof of the net from close range.

The second half was played at a frantic pace with Spartans’ goalkeeper Kevin Swain the busier custodian early on when he saved efforts from Jamieson and Craig Thomson while Renton grazed the crossbar with a magnificent shot.

“That was a good work out against quality opposition,” said Newtongrange manager Alan Miller, while Spartans manager Douglas Samuel said: “The game was exactly what we hoped it would be.”
