Penicuik Athletic boss Craig Meikle revealed his delight at adding last season’s Lowland League top goalscorer Aaron Somerville to his squad, believing the striker could go on to become a legend at the club.

The former Whitehill Welfare frontman has penned a one-year deal at Penicuik after hitting 32 goals for the Ferguson Park side and has joined along with midfielder Daryl Devlin from Gala Fairydean Rovers.

Meikle is hopeful Somerville can continue his hot streak in the juniors next season after four years with Whitehill.

He said: “I’ve been trying to sign Aaron since he was at Newtongrange, before he even went to Whitehill. Every summer I’ve spoke to him, but he’s a loyal lad and stuck with it at Whitehill. What we are lacking at Penicuik is goals and Aaron has a great scoring record.

“The priority for me has
always been getting goals and adding goals to my squad because we’ve not been scoring enough. Hopefully he’ll bring us some much needed goals.

“I’m hoping he’ll go on to be a Penicuik a legend in a few seasons’ time. He’s going to have a bit pressure on him given his goals in the Lowland League.”

• Newtongrange Star have also raided the Lowland League setup with the signing of experienced midfielder Kevin Motion from Spartans.
