Division 2 Redhall Star 15s won 4-0 away to Craigroyston BC 15s in an action-packed clash at Muirhouse Parkway.

Initially it was a stop-start sort of game with neither side really able to find any rhythm, but by the 15th minute both sides had settled and chances were flowing.

Craigroyston carved out the first real clear cut opportunity of the game when Lachlan Black brought the ball forward down the right-hand side. He provided a low cross to Leon Charlton who was waiting in the middle, but Charlton’s shot was tame and Ryan Green saved comfortably.

With Craigroyston bodies forward, Redhall were able to counterattack and they made the most of their opportunity in the 19th minute. It was a brilliant precision pass through the back four by Cameron Grant which Samuel Donachie ran on to and with just the keeper to beat, he kept his cool to put the visitors in front.

Buoyed by their early lead, Redhall looked to attack again and Adam Robertson got forward from right back to cross into Robbie Campbell, but his shot was tame and simple for Craigroyston goalie Omid Partovi to save.

The pressure kept coming from the away side who weren’t content with their one goal lead and it didn’t take long before they doubled their advantage. A shot from Nathan Robertson in the area was spilled by the goalie, but Campbell was on hand to bury the rebound from an acute angle.

Craigroyston weren’t throwing in the towel just yet, though, and fought their way back into the game before half time as they almost pulled a goal back thanks to Darren Hunter.

He received the ball on the edge of the box before evading one challenge and having a pop at goal, but it flew just past the right-hand post.

It was a familiar sight as Redhall controlled the start of the second half and looked to keep going forward in search of goals.

Donachie was chasing his second for Redhall and almost had it a minute into the second half. He was threaded through brilliantly by Robertson who played a brilliant defence splitting pass in front of him, but with just the keeper to beat, he tried to chip the ball but it was well anticipated by Partovi who pushed it over the bar.

Redhall had been showing some intelligent passing all afternoon and the build-up play which preceded the third goal was quite exquisite. After some patience in midfield, Robertson was put through down the left-hand flank before he crossed to the near post where Donachie headed in for a brace.

The fourth came shortly after thanks to a bit of luck, or was it skill? Adam Shortiss’ was on corner duty and his ball in managed to deceive the goalkeeper and end up directly in the back of the net, just creeping inside the far post.

4-0 was the score and any chance Craigroyston may have had to get back into the game had diminished. It had been an assured performance from Redhall who came out with belief and purpose from the word go, although Craigroyston will argue that missing a few key players certainly didn’t help their cause. Next up for the winners is a second-round tie against Currie FC in the John McConnell Memorial Cup. Meanwhile, Craigroyston face a trip to Hutchison Vale in the second round of the Federation of Hearts Supporters Cup.
