Ainslie Park will play host to the inaugural Edinburgh 2014 seven-a-side football tournament this summer, with over 200 players expected to participate in aid of the Homeless World Cup Foundation.
It is hoped the event on June 15 will be able to reproduce a carnival atmosphere that wouldn’t look out of place at the World Cup in Brazil with over 20 teams engrossed in some intense, yet friendly competition.
Organiser Scott Moncrieff said: “We’re looking for 24 teams to enter. Ideally each squad will have ten players.
“It’s £100 for each team to enter and we’re looking for each player to raise about £50 in sponsorship. All the money raised will go to the Homeless World Cup Foundation.
“It’s coinciding with the World Cup in Brazil, so we’re having group stages and then progression to different levels and every team will get at least five or six games. There will be music all day, food and drink – it’s going to be a good atmosphere.
“We would like to raise at least £10,000 for the Foundation and we’ve got 16 teams already registered and signed up, so we’re looking for another eight to ten sides. Some of the teams may pull out as it’s still a couple of months away, so we’ll take on a waiting list if needs be.
“We welcome anyone to register, work colleagues or businesses, groups of mates or even amateur clubs as it will be beneficial for their pre-season.”
