Spartans’ difficult start to the season continued as the champions lost out 2-0 away to Gretna, their second defeat of the Lowland League season.

The injured-ravaged Capital side were without five first-team players as they made the journey south.

The visitors started brightly but failed to test Gretna goalkeeper Graham Wright. Sean Muhsin had a couple of good chances while left back Gary Cennerazzo curled a shot just wide.

As the game went on the home side started to settle and went ahead just before half-time when Alan Inglis flicked the ball over Spartans keeper Kevin Swain and into the net.

Gretna doubled their lead in the 64th minute when Joe Slattery beat Mike Bruce to the byline. He cut the ball back into the box to the feet of Iain Anderson who blasted the ball home.

With about ten minutes left Spartans’ task was made even harder as they were reduced to ten men for the second week in a row. Kevin Motion was shown a second yellow card when the midfielder looked to grab Gretna’s Connor Graham after the trialist appeared to dive for a free-kick.
