Under-strength Spartans downed by Vale of Leithen

Goals from Kenny O’Brien and Jason Stevens ensured Vale of Leithen eased through to the South Challenge Cup fourth round with a comprehensive 2-0 victory over Spartans at Ainslie Park.

Spartans boss, Dougie Samuel fielded a makeshift side with one eye already on tomorrow evening’s Scottish Cup replay against Berwick Rangers.

It was the visitors who got off to a perfect start, opening the scoring after just two minutes as Kenny O’Brien raced in to side-foot the ball high past Kevin Swain.

The visitors continued to press forward and deservedly doubled their lead seven minutes later with Jason Stevens, powering a shot in off the underside of the crossbar from the edge of the box. Defender Mike Bruce was also sent off.
