LINLITHGOW ROSE boss David McGlynn hailed the contribution of Graham Weir as his team booked their place in the third round of the William Hill Scottish Cup by blowing away Inverness Clach.

Former Hearts player Weir’s set-pieces proved pivotal in an awesome performance by the Junior outfit.

“We were terrific, with Weiry proving again how valuable he is to the team,” said McGlynn. “His set-piece deliveries gave us two of our goals while the third was a fabulous finish from Blair Batchelor. We had a shaky time just before the break when they equalised but a quick goal from Colin Lieper settled us again then the third goal knocked the stuffing from them.

“It was fast slick and clinical and they didn’t have an answer to us after that.”

Linlithgow took a big travelling support to the Highland capital and grabbed the lead after only four minutes. Weir swung over a cross to the back stick where Gary Thom met it to blast the ball into the net.

They then dominated the game with Ruari MacLennan testing Errol Watson with a rasping volley.

A one-goal lead is often not enough, though, and, just before the break, Linlithgow were punished for some slack defending. Clach winger Blair Lawrie played a one-two at the heart of the Rose defence before slamming the ball into the net.

Linlithgow went back in front ten minutes after the break when Weir’s free-kivk was headed past Watson by Colin Lieper.

A third came in the 68th minute and it was worth waiting for.

Weir started it out wide left. Chris Gray and Weir again played their part in a great passing move allowing Batchelor to slide the ball home for a goal which brought the crowd to their feet.

Now in complete control, Rose had the ball in the net again when Tommy Coyne swept the ball home only for the referee to draw them back for an offside decision.
