Athletic started brightly and within two minutes the visitors were ahead. A throw in from the right into the box caused the Whitehill defence to hesitate and Mark Osborne pounced to shoot home from eight yards out.

On the half hour mark the visitors doubled their lead when a through ball was misjudged by Ryan McKenzie allowing Sean Martin to race clear and score past the exposed Young. On 34 minutes Whitehill pulled themselves back into the game, as Andy Martin combined well with Steven Manson who crossed for Aaron Somerville to power a header into the
bottom corner of the net. The same player almost levelled just before the break forcing a good save from Craig
Pennycuik in goal.

With the wind at their backs Welfare came out looking for a quick equaliser and Andrew Kidd found Kerr Dodds with a well worked corner but his effort was well saved again by the keeper. On 69 minutes, Martin broke free down the right, and his cross was chested down by McIntosh who cut inside his marker and slotted home at the near post to make it 2-2.

Preston were nearly handed the lead again as the home defence struggled to deal with a long ball and Young did well to save at the feet of Sean Martin. Manson was left with only the keeper to beat but the Welfare winger hesitated and was tackled, before Wayne Sproule missed another chance to win the game in injury time.
