Youths: Hutchison Vale 16s storm through in cup

Have your say

Reigning Under-15 Scottish Cup winners Hutchison Vale marched into the third round of the Under-16 competition with a 6-1 win over Broxburn Athletic Colts.

A double by Manchester United-bound 14-year-old Ethan Feachen plus goals by team-mates Gabrie Auriemma, Fraser Paton, Ryan Fox and Cameron McAlpine eased the Division 1 table-toppers through, but only after Broxburn had taken a shock lead.

Against the run of play and with the aid of a deflection, the away side were ahead after just 14 minutes.

Broxburn goalkeeper Marc Spalding had made two great saves from Feachen before his side broke away on the counter attack. Campbell Anthony’s 20-yard shot deceived Hutchie keeper Byron Gibb, who had already dived to his right – as it took a wicked deflection off Cameron Begbie and into the net.

The away side’s lead lasted just six minutes though, as Auriemma fired the equaliser. Hutchie striker Fox held the ball up well on the edge of the box and he turned before feeding the attacking midfielder who found the net.

Fraser Paton then gave Hutchie the lead after 28 minutes. With Broxburn camped inside their own half, his unstoppable strike from 25 yards went in off the inside of the post.

Any talk of a cup upset now seemed a distant memory as Fox bagged Hutchie’s third with a composed strike.

A through ball found the little striker, who stopped it dead with a great first touch before slotting past Spalding into the corner.

Feachen then made up for his earlier misses with a quick turn and shot from outside the area which left Spalding helpless just before half-time, to take the stuffing out of the Colts.

Hutchie continued to dominate in the early stages of the second half and with Broxburn yet to test out Gibb since their opening goal, they went four ahead.

McAlpine finished off a wonderful solo run which took him from his own half, down the right wing and into Broxburn’s box, before beating Spalding with his shot.

Hutchie were rampant now, with no hope of a Broxburn comeback – their side completely up against it – and only a timely intervention by Marc Simkin prevented his side going further behind.

An inch-perfect crossfield ball by Feachen found Paton out wide. The latter showed immense pace to drive down the left wing before flashing his cross in front of goal, into Fox’s feet, but the striker’s shot was blocked by a last-ditch Simkin tackle. Another well-worked move reaped Hutchie their sixth and final goal of the afternoon. Substitute Lewis Swaney played a neat one-two with Fox and the left back’s cross found Feachen, who side-footed into the net.

It is certainly going to take something special to deny this Hutchison Vale side Scottish Cup glory for the second year running, with the team looking unstoppable at the moment.
