McHugh’s first SPL goal is a winner

Motherwell substitute Bob McHugh was thrilled to score his first goal in the Clydesdale Bank Premier League just four days after enduring the disappointment of having one ruled out in a cup clash.

McHugh came off the bench to score the Fir Park side’s late winner in a 1-0 result against Aberdeen following a pacy breakaway after the visitors had failed to capitalise on a corner kick at the opposite end of the pitch.

The goal was even more special as McHugh had seen an extra-time effort ruled out against Hibs in the Scottish Communities League Cup, with the Easter Road side going on to beat Motherwell 7-6 on penalties to reach the quarter-finals.

“I’m delighted to get my first SPL goal,” he said.

“I’ve been waiting a while for it and although I’ve scored a few goals in other competitions, it’s good to get that first SPL strike under my belt.

“It was obviously disappointing scoring what I thought was a perfectly good goal in midweek which I thought should have stood, so that was a setback, but to get on and score more than makes up for it.”
