O’Hagan kicks Musselburgh to win over league leaders

DAVID O’HAGAN was the star of the show for Musselburgh on Saturday, as they toppled Murrayfield Wanderers at Stoneyhill.

The stand-off kicked all 21 of his team’s points including a penalty on the stroke of full-time to clinch victory over the early season pace-setters in the National League.

“That was a great team performance. Murrayfield stepped up big time, but we kept digging away, putting them under pressure, and forcing them to give away penalties, which thankfully I was able to take advantage of,” said O’Hagan.

Murrayfield’s points came from tries for scrum-half Andrew Baikie and full-back Iain Harper, while Barry Turnbull kicked a conversion and three penalties.

“We have only conceded two tries all season which is a statistic we are proud of, but Musselburgh put us under a lot of pressure out there and that is why we ended up giving away so many penalties,” said Murrayfield coach Bruce Aitchison, after seeing his team drop to third in the table.

This victory lifts Musselburgh to second, one point behind Hawick YM, who won 23-17 at Linlithgow. Match of the day next weekend looks certain to be at Stoneyhill when the league’s top two teams lock horns.

Edinburgh University Blues underlined their potential to be serious contenders in the league now that term time has resumed with a 62-13 demolition of Garnock, meaning that they have won their last two games by an aggregate total of exactly 100.

It was also a good weekend for RHC, who defeated Ellon 33-28.
