Rangers' Martyn Waghorn out injured for '˜number of weeks'

Rangers striker Martyn Waghorn will miss around 6-8 weeks with a knee injury sustained in the club's 2-1 victory over Kilmarnock in the Scottish Cup.

The striker netted his 28th goal of the season from the penalty spot on Tuesday.

However, he was injured in the act of winning the penalty and had to be substituted a short time after.

He was later seen leaving the stadium on crutches amid fears he could miss the remainder of the season.

Scans revealed the injury wasn’t quite as severe as Rangers had feared, but it’ll be enough to keep him out of the Scottish Cup quarter-final clash against Dundee or Dumbarton.

The club said in a statement: “The knee injury Martyn Waghorn sustained in Tuesday night’s Scottish Cup win over Kilmarnock is not as bad as was first feared.

“Martyn suffered the injury in the challenge that saw Rangers win their early penalty and although he recovered enough to score from the spot, he could not continue.

“The initial impact on an unforgiving Rugby Park surface resulted in bruising and lacerations which were immediately visible. However, thankfully the scan has revealed there will be no need for surgery, although Martyn will be sidelined for a number of weeks.

“His rehabilitation will be expertly managed by the medical team and we look forward to welcoming him back sooner rather than later.”
