Rangers manager Steven Gerrard responded to the controversy surrounding the SPFL vote on how to end the season below Premiership level by calling for an independent investigation.

"I've been watching closely and it does seem a bit of a mess," Gerrard told Sky Sports' Football Show.

"I have watched the SPFL getting absolutely slaughtered over the last few days for the way it has handled things and I am waiting for the leader (SPFL chairman) Murdoch MacLennan to say 'I'm going to allow an independent investigator to come in and show everything is OK'.

"He needs to show some real leadership at this time. He needs to allow an independent investigation into what's happened to make sure there is fairness and transparency because it's so confusing at the moment."
