Edinburgh South eased to a 6-0 victory over Inch Colts in the South East Region Youth FA under-13 Lothian Buses Cup at Double Hedges.
The South Edinburgh derby proved an even game until Edinburgh South managed to score three goals, all via corners, in the first half.
The visitors’ Reece Foster was involved in five of his side’s goals, taking all the corners for the first three and then scoring two himself.
Edinburgh South opened the scoring when Foster delivered the ball into the box and, after a goalmouth scramble, Freddie Carcas managed to hammer the ball into the net.
From his second corner, Foster’s cross met the head of Marcus Cairns who placed the ball past Inch goalkeeper Jude Mothersole. Foster’s third corner resulted in another goalmouth scramble, and this time Greg Park managed to divert the ball into the net.
Edinburgh South continued their dominance in the second half. Foster picked up the ball in the corner of the area and launched it over Mothersole to score his first goal.
Inch Colts nearly pulled a goal back a few minutes later, but Ewan Paterson’s shot from the edge of the area was well saved by Edinburgh South goalkeeper Robbie Urquhart.
A free-kick from Colts’ Mark Darling found Matthew Robertson in the area, but his half volley went narrowly wide of the net. Edinburgh South’s fifth goal soon followed, Cairns with his second strike after cutting inside from the left before hitting a low shot into the bottom right corner of the net.
With the match out of their grasp, Darling’s long-range shot flew narrowly over the bar. Foster completed the scoring when his shot from the edge of the area nestled into the bottom corner. Mothersole managed to get a hand to the ball, but it wasn’t enough to divert it wide.
In the closing stages, Edinburgh South nearly increased their lead. Park’s shot from 12 yards hit the left post and Nicholas Dolan’s shot from close range was tipped over the bar.
Darling had the opportunity to grab a consolation goal in the final minute. He was played through by Jay DePlacido, but Urquhart caught his shot.
Ian Robertson, the Inch Colts coach, said: “I thought it was an even game until the first goal went in. We’re looking for some new players as we’re low on numbers. Our aim is to keep improving. We want to improve the skill of the players. As long as we’re doing that then results do not matter as much.”
Mark Cairns, the Edinburgh South coach, said: “It was a tough contest. In the first half it was a wee bit fiery. We’ve won all our games now. We hope to be towards the top half of the table this season and hopefully win a cup.”
