Riddel pleased by Leith’s show against Hibs

Have your say

There was little to separate Leith Athletic from Hibs’ youngsters as the teams played out a 1-1 draw in an East of Scotland Qualifying League Section C tie played before around 200 supporters at Meadowbank 3G.

Jordan Sinclair, who as a youngster learned his trade with Athletic, snatched a late equaliser for Hibs in their first fixture in the East Seniors to cancel out Euan Campbell’s converted penalty in the first competitive meeting between the sides for 80 years.

Leith coach Derek Riddel said: “We played really well for 75 minutes and then, given the nature of Hibs and their
fitness, they came back into the match later on. Overall, it was very pleasing – especially
considering we were missing players – and the result is great for morale.

“It was a good team performance. Ian Gordon was good in goals and Euan Campbell did well in attack.”

Lothian Thistle Hutchison Vale top Section A of the East of Scotland Qualifying League after a 6-1
demolition of Eyemouth United in Berwickshire.

Jamie Butler scored twice for the visitors, who occupy top spot in the group thanks to a superior goal difference over Kelso United. Butler’s brace came as Lothian established a 4-1 lead by half-time, John Williams and Sean Lynch also hitting the target for the away side. Omar Ali and Craig Stevenson added second-half goals to give Grant Carnie’s men a handsome opening-day victory.

In tonight’s games, in Section C, Craigroyston will look to bounce back from their defeat by Edinburgh University as they get their Qualifying League campaign under way with a visit to Heriot-Watt University, who dispatched Burntisland
Shipyard 3-0 on Saturday.

Tynecastle visit Eyemouth while Civil Service Strollers, who lost 1-0 to Kelso United, will host Lothian.

In Section B, Ormiston – 1-0 winners over Duns – host Edinburgh University, while Hawick Royal Albert visit Duns after a 3-0 defeat at Stirling University.

In Section D, Easthouses Lily, who lost 4-0 to Spartans’ East of Scotland, will travel to Peebles Rovers while Berwick Rangers – who won 3-1 at Peebles on
Saturday – host Coldstream.
