The Yorkshire club have the Scottish Cup-winning head coach at the top of their wanted list and made an official approach to Easter Road chief executive Leeann Dempster on Friday.

Hibs have been closed for business over the weekend. The next step is likely to involve Dempster speaking with Stubbs to gauge whether he is keen on the post at the English Championship club before responding.

Rotherham have also approached Coventry City for permission to speak to former Hibs boss Tony Mowbray, but Stubbs is their clear first choice to succeed Neil Warnock, who turned down the offer of a new contract after successfully keeping the Millers in the Championship.

If Hibs allow the 44-year-old Liverpudlian to speak to Rotherham, the job will be his if he wants it. Stubbs still has a year on his contract at Easter Road, so compensation would have to be paid if he moves on.

The former Bolton, Celtic and Everton defender is currently trading at 1/10 with Skybet to fill the Rotherham vacancy, while Mowbray, a popular Hibs manager in the mid-Noughties, is second favourite at 5/1.
