Scottish Cup: Currie fires up Bonnyrigg but Tynecastle come up Short

It took Bonnyrigg a while to settle on a difficult pitch but they created many chances in the opening quarter, and it took until the 40th minute before they made the breakthrough. Lee Currie finished of with style a long spell of pressure on the Hawick defence. “We needed that goal as we were getting frustrated with the run of the ball on the pitch,” he said.

Only a couple of minutes later and Lewis Turner pounced on a poor pass to lob the keeper and double the Rose’s lead.

Currie grabbed his second of the match when slamming home a great cross from Neil Martyniuk. The visitors continued to dominate the game but had to wait till the final ten minutes before they completed the scoring. Stevie Thomson finally got on the score sheet with an effort which was clawed back over the goal line by the keeper and Kyle Wilson scored from a super Dean Brett low cross to complete the rout.

Bonnyrigg gaffer David White said: “Considering the state of the pitch we did well to get a result here. The ball wouldn’t run true and bounced all over the place. That’s why it took us a while to get that first goal. When we did open the scoring we settled and ran the game from there.

“We had some big games coming up so it was important to keep the run going. We have a big game on Wednesday against Tranent in our first League game of the season. However we are now into the second preliminary round against Tynecastle or Shortlees. We are in a strong competitive league with a lot of good teams in it so we will have to keep our concentration going all season if we’re to be successful.”

Currie added. “I managed two today but really it doesn’t matter who gets on the score sheet as long as we are winning games. I managed 15 last year so it would be good get near that figure this time around. “

Bonnyrigg are playing with a lot of confidence this season again and with a bit of good luck could be in for another long run in the Scottish Cup, that is surely in the back of their minds.

Rose will face Shortlees AFC after the Kilmarnock-based club defeated Tynecastle 2-0 at Meggetland yesterday.

Keir Knapp opened the scoring 18 minutes into the second half for the Scottish Amateur Cup holders when he shot from the edge of the box. And Owen Quigley made it 2-0 three minutes later who also scored from the edge of the box, but his effort took a deflection.

It was a historic day for both clubs, who were making their debut in the Scottish Cup. Tynie had waited 90 years, but Shortlees a lot less as they were only formed in 2009.
