Spartans boss slams South Division’s sole promotion slot as ‘ridiculous’

SPARTANS manager Alex Cunningham reckons the teams in the South Division are facing a “ridiculous” task as they battle for one promotion spot.

“It is too tough,” said Cunningham. “For 15 teams to be competing for only one spot makes this a ridiculous league.”

Spartans, who entertain Edinburgh United in a Capital derby tomorrow, have made a decent start to the season, losing just once in five league outings and claiming a notable scalp in the first round of the East of Scotland Cup as they beat Lochee United away on penalties. “It’s been pleasantly surprising,” added Cunningham, who has two experienced figures in Kenny Cameron and Andy Colbridge assisting him.

“I’d say we’ve been punching above our weight so far as we brought in a lot of players over the summer and I thought it would take them longer to settle in. But all credit to the players.”

United are propping up the table after three defeats, but Cunningham isn’t reading too much into either that or the 8-0 defeat against holders Auchinleck in the Junior Cup last weekend. “It was always going to be tough for them against Auchinleck as Edinburgh have got a new management team trying to build a side,” he said.

“They’ll be a different proposition on Saturday. The last time we played them they went 1-0 up before we managed to get on top, but I think they’ll be better organised for this game.”
