Spartans moved up to fifth in the Lowland League after a comprehensive 4-0 victory over Gala Fairydean Rovers at Ainslie Park.

Blair Atkinson got the ball rolling in the ninth minute firing high into the net after collecting a pass from Gregor Woods.

Jake Davidson went agonisingly close to doubling the tally moments later before Atkinson added a second ten minutes before the interval.

Jack Smith made sure of the points when the frontman picked up a loose ball on the hour mark and sent a looping shot over the head of goalkeeper Fraser Morton and into the top corner. Nicky Reid completed the scoring.

On-form Jonathan Brown opened the scoring at New Dundas Park in the 18th minute and Dean Brett made it two for Robbie Horn’s men on the half-hour mark.

Colts were reduced to ten men nine minutes before the break when Richard Kirwan was given his marching orders for hauling back Kieran McGachie in the box.

Lee Currie scored the resulting spot kick to put the Midlothian club 3-0 in front. Brown grabbed his brace and Rose’s fourth midway through the second half and Jamie Docherty added a fifth.

Stephen O’Neil notched a consolation for Colts.

And in the bottom-of-the-table clash at Victoria Park, Vale of Leithen and Edinburgh University drew 1-1. The students drew first blood through Abdul Yusuf but Alex Imlah equalised at the start of the second half with.

Civil Service Stroller’s match with Berwick Rangers at Christie Gillies Park was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.
