Spartans girls hopeful of cup success

Spartans Women aim to create history this evening by getting their hands on silverware for the first time in the club’s short history.

However, to do so they will have to overcome a Glasgow City side that hasn’t tasted defeat in domestic competition for more than a year.

The Ainslie Park girls have saved their best performances this term for the cup competitions and go into the match confident of winning the Scottish Women’s Premier League Cup final and ending City’s vice-like grip on the Ladies game.

When the pair met one another in the league recently, Spartans were on the wrong end of a discouraging 9-0 defeat, but boss Debbi McCulloch believes that result will have no bearing on tonight’s match.

She said: “The defeat was a sore one for everyone connected to the club but I think these results can sometimes prove beneficial because you can learn a lot from them.

“Of the nine goals that City scored, five of them were preventable and wouldn’t have occurred if we had done the basics right.

“However, it’s important to learn from the experience, to shake yourself down and dust yourself off.

“It was a tough one to take and no-one was happy with the performance because we know we can do much better and that’s what we aim to show tonight.

“I don’t think there will be anyone going into this match in the wrong frame of mind because they are a great bunch of girls and have fantastic energy.

“We know we are in for a tough, challenging, physical and fast game against City.

“We need to focus solely on our game plan and stick to it because everything else will take care of itself.”

Tonight’s match takes place at Recreation Park, Alloa (kick-off 7.30pm) and admission is £5 Adults/£2 Concessions.
