Spartans given honour of opening Lowland League season

Spartans will kick-off the new Ferrari Packaging Lowland League season on a Friday night when they travel to Stirling University.

Dougie Samuel’s side will head up the M9 to take on Shelley Kerr’s Students on the July 29.

New boys Civil Service Strollers will begin with a home tie at Marine Drive against fellow Lowland League debutants Hawick Royal Albert.

Steven Hislop begins his first full season as Whitehill Welfare boss with a tough opening fixture against East Kilbride at Ferguson Park, while Preston Athletic host BSC Glasgow.

Edinburgh Uni will have to wait until the following week to begin their campaign. Originally scheduled to face relegated East Stirlingshire, they will now kick-off with an Edinburgh derby away to Spartans on August 6 due to the Shire’s League Cup fixture with Annan on July 30.

Old rivals Whitehill and Spartans will face off for the first time on October 8, with the return fixture at Ainslie Park on Hogmanay.

The season wraps up on April 22. Whitehill are at BSC Glasgow, Edinburgh Uni host Preston Athletic, Civil Service travel to the borders to play Selkirk while Spartans will be hoping to at least still be in contention for the title ahead of their final game at home to Dalbeattie.
