Threadbare City bid to stay on track

The Capital side are unbeaten in both competitions this season and host a Dundee side who have yet to win a match.

But player-coach Barry McGuigan will take nothing for granted after his threadbare side dropped a set at South Ayrshire last weekend.

It was enough to nudge them from the top of the league as Kilmarnock Blaze’s straight-sets win over Dundee put them ahead on sets difference.

McGuigan brought Simon Hammond and Graham Riddle out of retirement due to a shortage of players. Scotland international Mike Penny could be out until  February with ankle ligament damage and Jamie McHardy is absent with a hand injury.

“I was worried about the South Ayrshire match for weeks prior to it as they were a bit of an unknown quantity and we were lacking players,” revealed McGuigan.

“We came through it but we are not out of the woods yet. It’s going to be hard going all the way to the Christmas break unbeaten.”

High-flying Edinburgh Jets travel to Glasgow Mets tomorrow seeking their first win in the John Syer Trophy this season. In the women’s competition, holders Edinburgh Jets are unbeaten but have a difficult tie against North Lanarkshire. NUVOC travel west to face Su Ragazzi.
