Title won't be enough for Edinburgh City

Despite having an 18-point lead at the top of the Ferrari Packaging Lowland League, Edinburgh City's Jordan Caddow isn't content to settle for the Meadowbank club retaining their title '“ he wants cup success as well.

The champions host Edinburgh University tomorrow in the South Challenge Cup third round, and after suffering yet more penalty shootout heartache at the same venue against East Kilbride in the East of Scotland Qualifying Cup, the right back is keen to progress this time around. “I think we did our best not to score goals against East Kilbride!” Caddow laughed. “It was one of those games that you get on winning runs. I don’t know if teams either become really good defensively or we just don’t create chances. I don’t think even Ross [Allum, top scorer] had many chances in that game and he normally gets loads.

“A cup run would be decent. Last year we reached the semi-finals and getting put out by BSC Glasgow was a bit of a nightmare [City lost 5-0]. We wanted to win everything. Even before we were champions, Gary [Jardine] had said himself that a season on he’d have been happy if we’d just kept developing. He demands a lot though, I don’t want to say perfection, but we demand it of ourselves now. We come in having drawn a game and feel absolutely gutted. It might just be small things he picks up on but the fact that he demands that of us, it breeds a winning mentality. At the start of the season you want to win every single game be it cup or league. I think with how far we are ahead in the league, we’re taking that as we just need to keep winning. I think when a cup game comes along there’s a we bit more pressure. If the league is a bit closer, you start thinking about other teams, how they got on and whether they can catch up. When it’s a cup game, you know you need to win or that’s it.”

That will be easier said that done against a good Uni side. “They’ve always been a decent side,” said Caddow. “I didn’t play against them at the start of the season so I’ve not really seen much of them but they’ve had good results. They won 5-0 away at Gretna and with the travelling and stuff, to do that down there is a phenomenal result. They’ve been scoring goals so we need to be wary of them.”

The long-serving defender has also welcomed some competition in the form of on-loan Hibs kid Aaron Dunsmore, who arrived at City last week, although the two did combine against Preston Athletic last Saturday, allowing Caddow to notch a rare goal. “It must be a thing I’ve got for Preston!” he joked. “I scored against them the last time when we won 8-2, and Saturday’s was a good ball in from Aaron Dunsmore. It was a downwards header at the back post but to be honest the keeper kind of palmed it in – I don’t think he could handle the power!

“I think Aaron can play anywhere across the back but Hibs have him in his natural position being right back. He’s a really, really good player. He only trains with us on a Thursday with being full-time at Hibs but for one training session and not even knowing the boys, to come in like that he played really, really well.”
