WAYNE SPROULE gave Vale the lead after 19 minutes, glancing a header in from a Jamie Lauder corner. Eight minutes later the sides were level as James Craigen curled a free-kick round the wall and into the bottom corner.

The second half saw the University pass up a number of chances before Roy Chatterjee put them ahead in the 70th minute, pouncing on the rebound from a Craigen shot.

Callum Frain got on the end of a Daniel Main knock-on to increase the students’ advantage six minutes later, but it was cut in the 84th minute when Stephen Sproule was upended in the area and Steven Radzynski converted the penalty.

An incident in the final minute of normal time saw Vale’s Scott Moffat having a double attempt at goal, with the home side protesting that Gair had used his hands to block the second shot on the line, but the referee waved away their appeals.
