Watt a season it has been, says Renwick

HERIOT-WATT University head coach Michael Renwick, along with another former Hibee and Evening News columnist Michael Weir, have guided the students to Central Taxis First Division championship glory and promotion back into the Premier Division at the first attempt.

Renwick, reflecting today on Wednesday night’s decisive 3-0 win against Peebles Rovers which clinched said: “We persevered and it was a case of being patient and our patience did tell in the end.

“Quietly, within our dressing-room, we knew what we wanted. Winning the championship was something I felt that we could go and achieve.

“Obviously the biggest thing is consistency and that was the case. In the early part of the season we were vulnerable because the students had just come back. However, we got through that period and we were never far from the top at any time.

“I looked what was ahead and knew that we had games in hand and when we came to play the teams that other people fancied like Preston Athletic, Craigroyston and Eyemouth United then it would be in our hands. Our objective was to hang in there until we played these teams. We did that and we peaked at the right time. We used the squad well in a heavy schedule which involved Saturdays and Wednesdays and every player has made a massive effort throughout the season.

“Hopefully my players will enjoy the occasion because it is very difficult to win things no matter what level of football you play at.”

Tomorrow, Renwick takes his team to Duns without Ricky Burke who suffered a broken nose on Wednesday evening although, otherwise, he has a full squad available.
