Where are the Hearts Scottish cup-winning team of 2006 now?

Craig Gordon: The goalkeeper, then 23, has had an eventful time of it in the intervening decade. He left Tynecastle just over a year after the 2006 final to join Sunderland for £9 million. At that point, it was a record fee paid by a British club for a goalkeeper. After a bright start to his Black Cats career, injury problems took hold and he ended five years with the club in 2012. The keeper had genuine doubts over whether he would ever play again and had two years out of the professional game before attempting to resurrect his career. Hearts tried to sign him in summer 2014 but he instead joined Celtic, where he has established himself as No.1 over the past two seasons while also reclaiming his place in the Scotland squad.

Robbie Neilson: The long-serving right-back, renowned for an impressive saving tackle in the 2006 final before scoring a penalty in the shootout, went on to briefly captain Hearts before earning a move to Leicester City in 2009. After two years in England, which incorporated a loan stint at Brentford, Neilson returned to Scotland to wind down his playing career with Dundee United, Falkirk and East Fife. Became Hearts Under-20s coach in 2013 and was promoted to his current role of head coach a year later.

Steven Pressley: The captain was forced out of the club just six months after the 2006 cup win after falling out with owner Vladimir Romanov. He joined Celtic where he spent two years before winding down his playing career with Danish side Randers and then Falkirk, the club which gave him his managerial launchpad in 2010. Currently in charge of Fleetwood Town after a spell as Coventry City manager.

Ibrahim Tall: The Senegalese centre-back remained at Hearts for another two seasons. Impressed in the 2006/07 campaign  before injuries took hold the following season. Joined Nantes in 2008 and after a two-year stint at Greek side Larissa, he has spent the last four years in Switzerland. Currently with Le Mont in the Swiss second tier.

Takis Fyssas: The Greek international left-back spent a further season at Hearts before returning to his homeland to wind down his career with Panathinaikos. After a spell as technical director with the Greek national team, he now, aged 42, performs a similar role at Panathinaikos.

Deividas Cesnauskis: The Lithuanian winger remained with Hearts until 2009. After spells in Greece and Azerbaijan, he is now back in his homeland playing for Trakai. Now 34, he remains part of the Lithuania squad.

Bruno Aguiar: Even after winning the cup, the Portuguese midfielder’s Hearts career took some time to ignite after he suffered serious injury the following season. Eventually emerged as the talisman of Csaba Laszlo’s 2008/09 team before leaving for Cypriot side Omonia. Has spent the past two seasons with Oriental Lisbon in the Portuguese second tier.

Paul Hartley: The inspirational midfielder, who was sent off against Gretna, left midway through the following season to join Celtic, where he enjoyed two and a half years. He then had a season apiece at Bristol City and Aberdeen before hanging up his boots in 2011. He has been in charge of Dundee since February 2014 after catching the eye in a successful two-and-a-half years as  Alloa Athletic manager

Rudi Skacel: The 2005/06 talisman left straight after scoring in the final to join George Burley at Southampton, where he enjoyed three years. After spells at Hertha Berlin, Slavia Prague and Larissa, he returned to Hearts in 2010 and spent another two seasons bolstering his legendary status before signing off with a double in the 2012 Scottish Cup final against Hibs. Has since spent time at Dundee United and Slavia Prague although had hoped to return for a third spell at Hearts when Gary Locke was manager. Currently at Czech side Mlada Boleslav.

Roman Bednar: The Czech striker spent a further season with Hearts, then moved to West Brom, where he was on the books for five years before joining Blackpool in 2012. Had a brief spell in Turkey before returning to his homeland with Sparta Prague in 2013. Now 33, he plays for FK Pribram.

Edgaras Jankauskas: Was unable to maintain his 2005/06 form at Hearts and left at the end of the following season. He had spells in Cyprus, Portugal, Latvia, Lithuania, USA and Russia before becoming assistant manager of Lokomotiv Moscow. Returned to Hearts as a surprise No.2 to John McGlynn for the 2012/13 season. Currently manager of the Lithuanian national team.

Substitutes:

Michael Pospisil: The Czech striker stayed with Hearts for a further 18 months before moving to Belgian side Sint-Truidense in January 2008. Returned to his homeland and then had a stint in Iceland. Currently playing amateur football in Germany’s seventh tier.

Saulius Mikoliunas: The Lithuanian winger left in 2009 after making more than 100 appearances for Hearts. After playing in Ukraine and Belarus, Miko is now back in his homeland with Zalgiris Vilnius. Still part of the Lithuania squad.

Julien Brellier: The French midfielder spent another season at Tynecastle before joining Norwich City in 2007. Moved to Swiss side a year later and retired in 2010 aged just 28. Currently a delivery driver for a medical company in France.

Steve Banks: The veteran Englishman was Hearts No.1 for a spell after Gordon’s departure and also became goalkeeping coach. Left in 2009 after incurring the scorn of Vladimir Romanov and went on to have stints as back-up keeper at  Dundee United and St Johnstone. Currently Blackpool’s goalie coach.

Christophe Berra: The homegrown centre-back became Hearts captain before being sold to Wolves for £3 million in 2009. After four and a half years at Molineux, where he played regularly in the Premier League, he has been with Ipswich Town for the last three seasons. A regular in the Scotland squad.
