Welfare are now sixth in the Ferrari Packaging Lowland League table with two fixtures remaining.

Spartans went ahead with their first attempt. Jack Beesley’s corner from the right was met sweetly by Paul Thomson, who volleyed first time in to the top corner past Bryan Young.

A well worked move had the hosts level on 25 minutes. Jack Jardine and Craig Anderson combined to put James Flynn in, and the young striker spun well and despatched past Ross Gilpin.

Welfare had turned it round just four minutes later, captain Nikki Murray turning John Hall’s cross back across Gilpin and in to the far corner.

A quick Jardine free-kick gave Andy Martin the chance to make it 3-1 just after half-time, but Gilpin made himself big and smothered his close-range effort.

Darren McGashan then did extend the lead shortly after with a terrific left foot strike from 20 yards that left Gilpin without a prayer.

Things went from bad to worse for Spartans when Murray’s header from a Stevie Manson corner squeezed it’s way under Gilpin for his second and Whitehill’s fourth.

Spartans were then awarded a spot kick when Young cleaned out George Hunter, and Jack Beesley reduced the deficit from 12 yards.

Whitehill restored their three goal advantage wit 13 minutes left, John Williams heading home fellow sub Daniel McKinlay’s corner.
