Young expects Rooney partnership to blossom

Young has struck up a real understanding with Rooney since his move to Old Trafford, with each continuing their stunning starts to the season during the international break.

Rooney scored twice in Friday’s European Championship qualifier in Bulgaria, with Young netting the only goal of last night’s Group G win over Wales.

And the latter reckons there is even more to come.

“It can only help playing with such a great talent,” said Young, who scored his third goal in his last three games for club and country at Wembley yesterday.

“He’s been tremendous from the word go, from the start of the season. I feel if we can keep playing well together at club level, we can bring it here at international level.”

Young admitted he had never felt better after continuing his amazing run of form since joining United.

“I’m always confident going on the pitch and I’m even more confident now,” he said.“Things have gone really well for myself and hopefully it can continue.”

Young’s goal made it six points out of six for England during the past week.

“We wanted to get six points out of both games and we’ve done that,” said Young, who knew qualification for next summer’s finals would be guaranteed by a draw in Montenegro next month.

“It’s in our hands. It’s going to be a tough game but I feel we can go there and get three points.”

Last night’s result also ensured England ended a run of four home games without a win going back more than a year.

“Obviously, it wasn’t the best performance but getting the three points was what I think we deserved,” he said.

Young was one of few outstanding performers for England, with Stewart Downing the other, the Liverpool winger laying on the winner for his former Aston Villa team-mate.

“It was great play by Stewart down the right and I found myself in the right position to finish it off,” said Young, who admitted England had their backs to the wall in the second half.

“They put us under a lot more pressure, which we knew they would do.”

He added: “They came and played with a lot of freedom.”
